Does Your Dog Need Sunscreen? The Importance of Sunscreen for Dogs

Hey Dog Side Family,

Summer is just around the corner, and we're all looking forward to spending more time outside with our pups. But as the temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, Lily and Monkey think it's important to remember that dogs can get sunburned, just like we can. That's why we're here to remind you of the importance of sunscreen for dogs.

First of all, it's important to understand the risks of sunburn for dogs. Just like humans, dogs can experience pain, redness, and even blistering if they're exposed to too much UV radiation. In severe cases, sunburn can even lead to skin cancer. And certain breeds, such as those with light-colored fur or thin coats, are more susceptible to sunburn than others.

So how can you protect your pup from the harmful effects of the sun? Here are a few tips:

  1. Use a pet-friendly sunscreen. Yes, you read that right - there are sunscreens specifically formulated for dogs! These products are typically fragrance-free and non-toxic, and can be applied to your dog's nose, ears, belly, and any other exposed areas. Just make sure you choose a product that's safe for dogs to ingest, in case they lick it off.

  2. Keep your dog in the shade during peak sun hours. If you're planning to spend time outside with your dog, try to do so during the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is less intense. And make sure your pup has access to shade, whether it's under a tree or a canopy.

  3. Provide plenty of water. Just like humans, dogs need to stay hydrated in the heat. Make sure your pup has access to clean, fresh water at all times, especially when they're spending time outside.

  4. Do a weekly routine body scan around your dog's skin. Notice anything that looks different, bumps, or changes of skin color. Early detection is the best way to help keep your dog healthy.

By following these tips, you can help keep your dog safe and comfortable in the summer sun.

Remember, your dog relies on you to keep them safe and healthy. By taking a few simple precautions, you can ensure that your pup has a fun and sunburn-free summer.
